THE TRADE RIVER RETREAT CABIN is a remote, tranquil, quiet and exceedingly private getaway right on the banks of a protected river, only 1.5 hours from the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Upon arrival, enter a world of peace and calm deep in the woods. Make delicious meals in a well stocked high-end modern kitchen, play in the river, relax in the sauna or enjoy a bonfire. This is not your typical cabin but a spiritual eco-oasis with a unique eclectic blend of modern, rustic, Native American and Japanese aesthetic.

THE SPACE

Modern yet rustic, but not at all primitive, the cabin was built not only for maximum energy-efficiency, but with much care in providing a safe, non-toxic, all-natural environment. Comfortable sleeping spaces are provided with several options including a small private bedroom, a large futon in the living room under the skylights by the wood stove, or a small futon on the screen porch by the banks of the river.

An easy scenic drive from the Twin Cities and its extremely tranquil and private setting, this is the perfect location for personal retreats for artists, writers, yoga practitioners, people in the healing arts or anyone in need of personal, spiritual or artistic creative rejuvenation. This is ideally suited to singles and couples looking a quiet getaway or personal retreat. Perfect for a romantic getaway.

The long winding driveway leads to secluded, heavily wooded grounds that have many Japanese garden touches but are kept in a mostly natural state.

Facilities include a large well-stocked modern kitchen with 6 burner professional stove, full bathroom with hot and cold running water and claw-foot tub (there is enough hot water for a shower but not enough to fill the tub unless heated supplementally on gas stove), gas heat, electricity, phone, wireless high-speed internet, modern wood-burning stove, 7 skylights, wood-fired sauna, screen porch on the river bank, an attached wooden deck with gas grill along the river, a gazebo (great for yoga), hammock (great for reading/napping), a large fire-pit with lots of wood provided, photo library and a high-resolution audio system with a great CD collection and wireless music streaming capabilities.

This forest oasis alongside a protected trout stream is surrounded by hundreds of heavily wooded acres. Enjoy the rarity of total privacy- no one else is within sight or sound. The Trade River is very clean with a nice shallow, sand bottom is perfect for swimming, wading or frolicking. Or just sunbathe on the dock, clothing optional.

The cabin is built to accommodate more than 2 people but solo retreat stays and couples are best suited to the space.

There is also a separate hand-built log cabin on the premises. The log cabin will not be occupied during your stay but can be rented additionally. Please contact us to inquire.

To maintain a retreat-like atmosphere we only allow one or two guests at a time. Also, due to past guest abuse, we no longer allow pets. If you are traveling with pets or have more than two guests please check our nearby Wood River Retreat cabin that allows pets and is better suited to small families of up to 4 guests.

This is my second visit at this wonderful sanctuary. This winter, I felt myself craving peace, quiet, tranquility, and reflection. This is exactly what Douglas’ space offers. I absolutely love the full kitchen. Making delicious, nourishing meals while in the northwoods is a blessing. I also adore the sauna, particularly the natural earthy smells that arise when using. The sound system is fantastic. Listening to my favorites while sipping on tea and watching the snow was exactly what I needed to renew my mind and spirit! Thank you for sharing such a great space.

We can’t wait to stay here again! Fully-stocked kitchen with gas range, lots of natural light, and an amazing sound system! It was great to have music playing while we cooked and read and we welcomed the lack of television. We had absolutely everything we needed and then some, like the sauna!

This was a wonderful spot to recharge and refresh!
