A POUR AS PURE AS THE PLACE: Copper Crow Distillery in Bayfield, Wisconsin

When my Open Air Places guests ask for the best place in town to enjoy a cocktail, I send them 4 miles north of Bayfield along Hwy 13, to the COPPER CROW DISTILLERY.

Located one block past Legendary Waters Resort & Casino, the distillery is a charcoal colored building, nestled into the pines. 

The architecture aptly resembles a crow, soaring overhead with wings outstretched. 

While the distillery has only been established for several years, it looks as though it’s been at home here forever.


In its gleaming stainless steel vats and stills, The COPPER CROW produces a crystal clear vodka distilled from wheat that is very smooth with a slightly sweet finish.  They also distill a dark full-bodied rum, with slight herbal notes that is put into charred oak barrels for aging.

The last time I stopped in for a cocktail, I learned that they’ve also recently added a gin to their menu, which I can’t wait to taste. 

At the COPPER CROW, their grains are regionally sourced, whenever possible and the area’s local orchards and farmers supply them with seasonal products. 

But you want to know the best part?  Their spirits are cut to proof using fresh, pure, water from our Lake Superior aquifer, hence their great tagline, “A pour as pure as the place”.

Walk up to the front door, past the pails of fresh green herbs potted with heaps of mint and basil, and you’re greeted at the tasting room with a smile from the bartender.  If you time your visit right, you might also see the owners Curt and Linda Basina chatting with customers and making sure their guests feel at home. 

Tall bar tables are reclaimed bowling alley lanes - lacquered with a clear and glossy finish. Really, this place is perfect for friends to gather around while they chat, and pick a cocktail from the menu.

If you can, grab the table by the large glass door in the tasting room that has views into the distillery with its impressive collection of brewing equipment.  This place sparkles and begs for a tour which is encouraged!

I took home a bottle of the CC’s flagship vodka, and a jar of Nan’s Naughty and Nice bloody mary mix on my last visit.  I can’t wait to give this spicy recipe a try the next tiime I have guests over to my place!
